Project 2: Contextual Fit
Analysis & Design of Adding On
The Smith House, built amidst the rocks and trees of a one-and-a-half-acre site, overlooks Long Island Sound from the Connecticut coast.
The family has commissioned us to renovate their home by adding new additional sections to the pre-existing design. This is project will focus on the fit of three dimensional massing and ordering systems as the design generator in the context of existing forms and three dimensional systems.
Narrative
The Smith’s live in an environment where work and family are greatly valued. Household of five, additional space is necessary for their desired needs. They love the great outdoors, as well as sports, especially volleyball. Adding to the pre-existing structure, we have sections that have incorporated their appreciation for nature and family bonding, while conserving the original beauty of the house. The parents wished for a more open space within the living room and kitchen, where they spend the most time, while looking at the Island Sound. They also urged for larger bedrooms, where they require more closets for storage. These new rooms will incorporate views to their yard, making them feel connected and comforted with their surroundings. As far as work, the Smith’s require office space for their music business that creates privacy from the rest of the house. While working from home, it is important to them to separate family and work, while also keeping them both accessible.
